On Shell types, uses and student data

Body

LIVE SHELL (Academic & Contains registered students)

For a course shell to be Live means they have a start and end date, even if the class it is for has ended or not yet begun and is thus is not currently active. Live Shells are for all courses that will contain registered students and should be the only type of shell that contains student data.

MASTER SHELL (Academic & Does not contain registered students)

Master shells are eternal. They have no start or end date (thus no *life cycle*) and are intended to be a place for content development, refinement and sharing amongst all instructors who are teaching the course or program for which the Master Shell was created. Test Students may be requested to be added to these shells for the purposes of confirming functionality however no registered student should ever be placed in one and they should never contain any registered student data.

SANDBOX SHELL (Professional Development & Does not contain registered students)

Sandbox shells are eternal. They have no start or end date (thus no *life cycle*) and are intended to be a place for individual or departmental professional development, testing and experimenting with the Brightspace LMS functions. Test Students may be requested to be added to these shells for the purposes of confirming functionality however no registered student should ever be placed in one and they should never contain any registered student data.
